Lemon Ruffled Curtain

Not long after posting pictures of my Japanese kitchen, I finished up a project that had been a long time in coming. As I mentioned, I really don't have very much storage in my kitchen, so my metal rack pantry has to do a lot of overtime in the storage department.

I love how convenient it is, but I just wasn't in love with staring at my cans and Kitchen Aid every day. So I created a ruffled curtain to add some color and hide my extra storage.
I'm going to share a little of how I made it, mostly in words with a few pics thrown in.

First I measured the size I wanted for the curtain space. I used an old white sheet, cut it to size, and hemmed all four sides, leaving the top side open on either end to put a curtain rod through.

Then I figured out how wide I wanted my ruffles and cut enough strips to cover the length of the curtain. I hemmed the ruffles on 3 sides (leaving the top side unhemmed).

I ruffled the unhemmed top with this awesome tip I picked up somewhere. I just set my stitch length to the longest and the tension to the tightest and it ruffles the fabric for me. Such a time saver! But you do have to know your sewing machine fairly well. Then I pinned the gathered strip to the top of the white curtain.
After I stitched it on, I added the next ruffled row underneath the bottom of the top row so that the stitching couldn't be seen.

For the first couple rows I pinned and then sewed.

But I found that it was too time consuming switching back and forth, so I ended up pinning the entire thing and then sewing after it was all pinned.
At the top, I stitched on a bit of ribbon to cover up the top ruffle layer's unfinished hem.
I'm not going to lie. It was a pretty tedious project after awhile. (Read-repetitive!!)
But I think the end result is so worth it!! Every time I walk into my kitchen I just love seeing those bright lemons.

Valentine's Day Heart Waffles

Since moving to Japan, I've had to get a little creative when it comes to Holiday treats. As you may have seen from my kitchen post, I do not currently have an oven.

I've since acquired a tiny toaster oven (think Easy Bake!) but any holiday treats requiring baking are usually put on the back burner. Literally.

When I started seeing all the fun waffles on Pinterest, I knew I was on to something! We *love* breakfast at our house and especially waffles. While I was laying in bed last night I thought it would be fun to make strawberry waffles in the morning. Then it hit me that with a few simple cuts, we could make them into hearts for Valentine's Day.

After making these this morning, my husband turned to me and said, Oh, this is something you saw on Pinterest, right? (Can you see how it's changed my life??) I told him that I'd thought of it while falling asleep last night. He said this was "totally Pinterest-worthy", so here it is!

All I did was cut a small V shape in the top center and then shave the rounded edges off the bottom half.

For this one, I didn't add quite enough batter to fill the waffle iron, so I didn't really have to trim the bottom half. I just added the V cut at the top.

We added strawberries into the batter and made a simple strawberry syrup on the stove top. The only thing we were missing was some yummy whipped cream on top! Next time, right?

Tutorial: How to make a Ruffle Pillow Case

My little girl is growing up and there's that awkward in between stage for when kids start needing a pillow. I had crib bedding for Hazel, but no pillow case to add to the set. I have made a pillow case before, but decided to add a little ruffle to this since it wasn't for a boy this time!

It was very simple, since pillow cases are simple to begin with. And let it be known that (at least for projects for myself!) I am an approximate sewer. I like things to look nice, but if they aren't absolutely perfect, I don't really sweat it. That being said, this is one of the first sewing tutorials I've done in a LONG time! So hope you all enjoy!

The first step I did was to get a pillow case I liked the size of and take the dimensions of it. Add a little to each side when cutting for your seam allowance.

Use these measurements to cut out 2 rectangle pieces of your pillow case body fabric.

Then decide how wide you want your ruffle to be (how much you want sticking out of the pillow case) and double the width, adding a little for the seam allowance.

To get the total length of the ruffle, measure all three sides (2 long and 1 short side) of the pillowcase and add the measurements together. You'll then double this number (you can get away with 1 1/2 times, but not less than that!) Cut out this long strip of ruffle fabric once you have your dimensions.

Fold it in half with the wrongs sides together (the pretty sides on the outside) and iron down the middle of the strip the long way.

If you have a serger, you can serge the raw edges together.

If not, you can zigzag it or just skip this step altogether. Once you have your long strip of fabric, use your favorite method to gather the fabric.

{A trick I love to do is to set my stitch length to the longest and then set my tension high so that the fabric gathers itself without needing to put on a ruffler foot. But make sure you practice this on a scrap piece of fabric first if you want to try this method for the first time!}

Once you have the ruffle gathered, go ahead and hem 1 of the short edges on each of the 2 pillowcase body pieces. This will be the edge that is left open to put the pillow in. You can add trim to it at this point if you would like to as well.

Then you just sandwich the ruffle piece in between the two pillowcase body pieces.

Pin all three layers together, making sure to catch all the layers.

Sew the three sides together (2 long and 1 short side) and serge edges if desired.

Turn it right side out...

And that my friends is it!!

One of My Favorite Things

I've yet to try my Sally Hansen ones, but the Rimmel 60 seconds is FANTASTIC when you're in a pinch to get your nails/toes done and dry. Which I always seem to be in.

Especially when I have a little 1-year-old constantly wanting to do what mommy does. Which is why I'm thankful it dries as quickly as it does. I can usually corral her for about 60 seconds before I have to set her free. And her toes aren't going to get polish everywhere.

It's a beautiful thing.

Japanese Kitchen

If you're not aware, half of the PoppySnaps team moved to Japan last August. Since then, I've been traveling, moving in, site-seeing, crafting, traveling, making new friends, learning a new language, traveling, and trying to keep up with the kidlets. It's been an amazing, if not ridiculously busy, year!

One thing people ask about when they hear I live in Japan is about the kind of house we live in, so I'm trying to put together a mini-series on our house. I can't explain how awesome this house is, so I'll mostly do it with pictures. Some things are very Western, but the Asian influence is definitely strong. Like having no oven!! But we'll get there.

Here is a peak into the kitchen.

We have a very open floor plan on the first level, so the dining area opens right into the kitchen.

One thing you might not notice at first is the lack of ANY built in cabinets. The only thing in the kitchen when we moved in was a fridge (we had to ask for that!) and the island. We got around the issue by buying a few pieces of furniture to help with storage.

My cookbooks are held up by a pot lid organizer from Ikea. Can't go wrong for $5! And I never have to pick up falling books.

Here is a view of the island inside the kitchen.

Here is a tiny (but present!) dishwasher. I love that we have one. And it can surprisingly fit a lot into it.

I got that kitchen rug at an adorable little shop in Taiwan during a trip, and it makes me happy every time I see it.

If you are familiar with Japanese bento boxes, then this kitchen will definitely make sense to you. Every flat surface on the island opens, giving a surprising amount of storage.

We can even fit all of our major countertop appliances (rice cooker, food processor, blender, toaster, etc.) in a drawer and tuck it away until we need it.

I LOVE this stove. If I could have one in every house we lived in, I would be one happy girl.

It is an induction stove. It only works with pots and pans that are magnetized. {which means we had a whole lotta pots and pans to get rid of when we first moved in!} It heats water to boiling in no time at all. And when you turn it off, the heat cuts off immediately giving the same effect as if you had taken the pan off the burner. AND, the burner never gets hot. Only the pan conducts heat, so right after taking a pan off, you can touch the burner without getting burned. Like I said, one of my favorite features.

Another amazing feature is this broiler/fish fryer.

You pop open the display next to it and tell it you want to cook a fish. Put a little water in the pan, and it cooks the fish to perfection EVERY time, I swear!

And now onto my not-so-favorite part. The above broiler is the only "oven" in the house. It's great for the functions it's supposed to do, but not the most amazing with the cookie making I sometimes try to make it do.

It's a really good thing that I *love* to cook and am not a big baker, because this would drive me crazy. I've been trying to get my Japanese speaking husband to get me a decent foreign voltage friendly toaster oven, but we're still in that process.

One thing I knew for sure when we moved in is that I wanted to have a paper sorting method. Paper seriously overtook our house in the last place! I wanted a good, sustainable solution. I came up with a small filing system and a paper holder to put papers until they were sorted.

It doesn't look super amazing when you look right at it, but from this view (that you mostly see), it's barely visible.

Which I love.

Another huge project for me was figuring out how to organize an open pantry. I love the idea of glass jars and writing. Here's how mine turned out.

I've still got plans for this baby, but right now I'm quite happy with it. Do you see the can organizer down there? It's awesome!

When I first posted about this, I don't think I explained it very well. With the pocket lining strip that's in the middle of the bag, I can actually keep my diaper bag semi-organized! AND not carry around an enormous bag for day-to-day outings.

These pockets fit my checkbook/pocketbook, wallet & keys, cell phone, sippy cup, diaper & wipes, bottle of water, and bottle (if needed).

while still leaving room in the center of the tote for a pouch sling, nursing cover, and diaper & wipes case.

I put the first one I made up for sale, but couldn't keep it there because as soon as I tried it once I was hooked! I can't stop using this bag. I simply love it too much!

We currently don't have one for sale in our Etsy store, but let me know if you want one and I'll custom make one for you too!

For those of you who are military, their new location is close to the commissary. So when you go do your grocery shopping on base, you can make an excuse to go there since it's so close. They used to do a 10% military discount on Mondays, but since their holiday hours are Thursday, Friday, and Saturday 11 am-8 pm, they offer a military discount whenever they are open!

Turquoise Sequin Ring Sling

This is a linen ring sling with a little bit of stretch. The fabric is a turquoise with embroidered flowers and sequins. It's perfect for a baby boy or girl!

This sling features sturdy aluminum rings that are guaranteed to last. A folded gather is used to attach the rings so that this sling cups your shoulder very comfortably. Coordinating brown ribbon with blue polka dots is stitched to the shoulder. This sling is perfect from newborn to toddlerhood. (As you can see I'm 9 months pregnant with a 2-year-old in this sling!)
Sling will include directions as well as some links to my favorite videos about threading and wearing ring slings. If you want a sling, but would like some custom fabric, be sure to let me know!!

What a fun time I had making this bag! I tweaked my last diaper bag design, so I think this one is PERFECT! It's extra big (because I can never pack enough stuff for my baby) with 6 different pockets...including a great cell phone pocket.

The single strap design allows for easy access to items in the bag without it falling off. And built with extra padding to keep your shoulder from getting sore! I just LOVE the colors on this bag because it is so modern & vintage...sure to get TONS of good comments. The yellow and grey make it so chic for either a girl or boy...I'd even take it out to use just a purse!

I've fallen in love with making bags...so any custom orders are welcome! I've got one in the works...

Children's Halloween Aprons!

I don't know if you're like me, but I always looked forward to Halloween sugar cookies as a little girl...okay, I still do! This children's apron will go wonderfully on your little one who likes to help around in the kitchen while you prepare Halloween goodies.

It is made from a textured black cotton fabric with appliqued corduroy white ghosts and accents of white ric-rac and orange ribbon. The ties around the neck and waist are made from white grosgrain ribbon. This apron will fit a child's size ~3-8.

I am so excited to offer these diaper bags I can't even tell you. I don't have the greatest shot of it yet, but here's some sneak peeks.

This bag is completely reversible. In these pics, I used it to put a whole bunch of crafting supplies in. It worked perfectly and I *loved* it!!

For a diaper bag, you can reverse the bag (I'll get pics posted soon!) so that the pockets are on the inside. The pockets are big enough to fit diapers, a traveling wipes case, baby bottles, water bottles, wallets, you name it. The pockets fully line the entire perimeter of the bag, so there's lots of room to throw stuff in. This is probably one of my favorite things I've made so far...although that could just be because it's something new?? I'm not sure.
